Golden Key Rejection Letter of 2003

September 3, 2003

Dear Golden Key Chapter Advisor:

I regret to inform you that I must decline your offer of membership in the Golden Key International Honour Society.

I am flattered that you wish to recognize my academic achievement, but I will not pay $80.00 to receive this “honour”.  In a time of escalating tuition fees, I find this entrance fee quite prohibitive.

Furthermore, I feel that membership in the Golden Key International Honour Society is an empty, hollow distinction, and that your organization caters to those who only want to pad their resumé with an achievement that takes no real effort – just money.  I see your offer no differently than the unsolicited e-mail offers I receive for instant university diplomas.

A fellow University of Toronto student once said, "the truly gifted don't need a golden key: they make their own."  If I should ever have need for recognition, contacts, or jobs, I will find them through my own energies and direction, and not through association with a society that preys upon the insecurities of students.

Please remove me from your mailing list.

Somehow, they mistook what I wrote to mean "I'm really interested in joining only not right now, so please send me another letter next year."
